The winner of the Jo Ross Award for 2013 is Ross Thompson for his contribution to improving our local environment. Sustainble land management has become the focus of Ross in his farming practices. He sees his role as custodian of the land; aiming to leave it in a better ecological condition for future generations. The award was presented at the Australia Day Ceremony in Machattie Park.
Ross owns and manages a cattle business which operates on the family property 'Goonamurrah'. As well as delivering a sustainable commercial return, importance is given to maintaining and improving the land conditions and water resources. Creation of a Bush Paddock Reserve; extensive erosion work; tree planting; water course regeneration; and re-fencing to protect vegetation regeneration are examples of proactive environmental work carried out by Ross and his team. Improvement in wildlife diversity has been a noted consequence of the works carried out.
Ross and his wife Dimity received several awards in 2011 including 'Champions of the Catchment' and the 'Carbon Cocky' Award.
As a councillor on Bathurst Regional Council, Ross promoted sustainable land manangement for the Bathurst rural sector. He instigated the Land Improvement Awards in 2010 which encourages landholders to maintain and improve the ecology of their land.
